This is turning into the Age of Creative Financing. With the banks in meltdown, my own finances as well, a guy’s gotta do what a guy’s gotta do.
My short story is this: In the past 12 months, I’ve gotten laid off, got bad credit from unpaid bills, been so short on cash I cut the land line phone. Then a buddy from Kellogg called asking me to come help him with his business in Boston. All I had to do was get there and I could live with him and work for a few weeks for good pay. But how did I book a flight with no money, no credit – or drive with a ten year old car all that way and then have nowhere to park it when I get there? I was too embarrassed to tell him any of this.
When in doubt, go to Google. I searched online for Fast Cash and found Chicago Title Loans. The car title loans people said my old Beemer was good for a $4000 loan. OK. Next, I found a deal on airfare, about $375. So I needed that, plus another $400 for getting around money. I could pull this one off, and I’d come home with a fat paycheck.
The good thing is Chicago Title Loans is nothing like those you see on Western Avenue or Roosevelt Road. There’s no tough Latina you talk with through a plate glass window. You do it all through an online application. Approvals come through in like five minutes. My checking account received the EFT the next morning. In two days, I was in Boston, working again. Paying off that loan was easy.
